Sustainability Initiatives Revolving Fund: SIRF

The Sustainability Initiatives Revolving Fund supports sustainability projects and campus engagement opportunities.

Mini Sustainability Engagement Grant

Grant recipients can use Mini Grants for peer-to-peer sustainability education during Campus Sustainability Month, Earth Day Every Day in April, Sun Devil Athletics Green Games, or similar activities to encourage hosting engagement or implement sustainability projects.

SIRF awards Mini Grants up to $500, and ASU University Sustainability Practices oversees them. Note: Interested applicants must submit an idea summary for prequalification before submitting a final application. USP will review the idea summary and determine if the proposed idea or program aligns with SIRF. We encourage you to submit your idea summary for prequalification in advance.

To apply for the Mini Grant, please complete the following steps:

  1. Submit your idea summary for prequalification.
  2. USP will review your prequalification submission and determine if the proposed idea or program aligns with SIRF. You will receive the final application materials via email for submission to the SIRF committee if approved.

Tier One University Community Sustainability Grant

Tier One grants are smaller projects designed to build ASU campus sustainability culture and promote student and employee engagement. Tier One grant recipients can receive up to $5,000. The Executive Director of USP and the SIRF committee oversee the funds.

To apply for a Tier One grant, please complete the following steps:

  1. Submit your idea summary for prequalification.
  2. USP will review your prequalification submission and determine if the proposed idea or program aligns with SIRF. You will receive the final application materials via email for submission to the SIRF committee if approved.

Brainstorming a grant idea

We recommend considering the following questions when developing Mini and Tier One grant proposals:

  • Is there a need for your project on an ASU campus?
  • What is the goal of your project, and who will it benefit?
  • What are the objectives of your project?
  • Which ASU sustainability goals do they support?

Mini and Tier One grant guidelines

Recipients must use funds for purposes that support ASU’s sustainability goalsGrants cannot be used for the following:

  • Funding for zero-waste events or sustainable food options from the Decidedly Green catering menu.
  • Projects on other university campuses, communities or organizations.

Changemaker Sustainability Grant recipients cannot apply for a Tier One grant as SIRF funds both, and the maximum submission request for a single event or project is $5000.

SIRF committee

The SIRF committee is composed of ASU senior management who approves project requests. The SIRF committee establishes the minimum financial goals the tier-two and three projects must meet for funding approval. ASU incorporates each project’s yearly savings into its annual and multi-year fiscal plans.
