Emergency Medical Services

Arizona State University Emergency Medical Services provides affordable standby emergency medical coverage to all ASU campuses.

ASU EMS also provides emergency pre-hospital medical care to students, faculty, staff and visitors. The EMS unit falls under ASU Employee Health and is regulated by the Arizona Department of Health Services. Team members participate in regular continuing education for updates on changing medical evidence and protocols.

ASU departments may request an EMS team to provide on-site emergency medical assistance. Each team comprises certified emergency medical technicians who bring a standard set of essential basic life support equipment to requested events. In the case of a medical emergency, providers can initiate life-saving interventions. An on-site EMS team improves the response time for medical attention and tactics.

ASU EMS works with local firefighters, paramedics and police officers. The unit uses an advanced networking system that provides in-depth communication between first responders. These communication efforts result in immediate and efficient patient care for all ASU community members.

Automated External Defibrillators

An Automated External Defibrillator is a device about the size of a laptop computer that analyzes the heart’s rhythm for abnormality and, if necessary, directs the rescuer through voice prompts to deliver an electrical shock to the victim. The shock, called defibrillation, may help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm and save someone’s life.

AEDs are available in many ASU buildings and facilities. They are typically located inside a tamper-resistant cabinet in a building’s lobby and main corridors. There is always an AED sign above the cabinet.

Follow these instructions to use an AED:

  1. Call 911.
  2. Open the unit and follow the directions. If there is an alarm, ignore it.

EHS offers awareness training, and Sun Devil Fitness Centers offer AED certification. You can access AED training on the EHS training webpage.
