Nonpedestrian Device Safety
Riding a bike, scooter or skateboard can be a convenient way to commute around campus, but it does come with hazards. Knowing the law and staying alert helps keep everyone safe.
Here are a few tips:
Before you go
- Always wear a helmet! Also, consider wearing closed-toe shoes and padding on your elbows, knees and wrists.
- Avoid distractions and put your earbuds and headphones away before you start your commute.
- Do not wear loose clothing that may catch your bicycle chain or wheels.
- Ensure your bicycle, scooter or skateboard works properly.
Riding on campus
- Be aware of and follow Walk-only zones hours and restrictions.
- E-bicycles, e-scooters and e-skateboards are prohibited on campus.
- Ride in designated bike lanes.
- Use hand signals to communicate your actions.
Additional tips
- Be aware of potentially loose gravel, sewer grates and uneven pavement.
- Walk your bicycle through intersections.
- When riding at night, wear light-colored clothing and use lights to be easily seen.
Remember: Bicycles, scooters and skateboards must follow local traffic laws like any other vehicle. Adhere to signs, follow signals and restrictions and stay aware of the traffic around you.
