Nonpedestrian Device Safety
Riding a bike, scooter or skateboard can be convenient for commuting around campus.
Safety guidelines
Knowing the law and staying alert helps keep everyone safe from potential hazards. Follow these guidelines when using your transportation device on campus:
- Avoid distractions. Put your headphones away before you start your commute.
- Be aware of potentially loose gravel, sewer grates and uneven pavement.
- Do not wear loose clothing that may catch your bicycle chain or wheels.
- Dress in light-colored clothing and use lights when riding at night.
- Ensure your bike, scooter or skateboard works appropriately.
- Follow walk-only zones hours and know restrictions.
- Ride in designated bike lanes.
- Use hand signals to communicate your actions.
- Walk your bike through intersections.
- Wear a helmet. Consider wearing closed-toed shoes and padding on your elbows, knees and wrists.
Electric transportation device safety
Lithium-ion batteries are used in transportation devices such as electric bikes, scooters and skateboards. Damaged or defective batteries can overheat, catch fire or explode. Therefore, battery-operated transportation devices should never be brought into any ASU building.
Follow these safety guidelines to ensure you are correctly handling your electric transportation device:
- Avoid charging the battery or device past its charge limit.
- Charge batteries below 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Comply with all manufacturer's recommendations.
- Keep batteries out of direct sunlight and at room temperature when possible.
- Use only listed and qualified testing laboratory products.
- Utilize the battery charger designed for the product by the manufacturer.
Policies and resources
The ASU Campus Transportation Code prohibits electric bikes, scooters and other similar non-pedestrian devices from being brought into any ASU building.
Electric-powered vehicles and other transportation devices, such as bicycles, scooters, hoverboards, etc., are prohibited in University Housing or residential communities because they are a fire hazard.
