Managing employee leaves of absence
The Office of Human Resources Benefits Design and Management staff are available to assist departments in managing leaves of absence and ensuring compliance with ASU policy as well as federal and state regulations.
Departments information
Faculty and staff members assigned to your department, school or college may request one of the following types of leaves:
- Continuous: If the individual must be absent from work for more than three consecutive workdays.
- Intermittent: If the individual must miss work on an intermittent basis due to an ongoing personal or an immediate family member’s medical condition.
Types of leave
A leave of absence may be categorized as one or more of the following types of leaves. Review the leaves policies for details about each leave type.
- FMLA leave
- ASU extended leave
- Military leave
- Personal leave
FMLA
Employees may be eligible for Family and Medical Leave Act leave for the following reasons.
- They have been employed by an Arizona university system institution — ASU, Northern Arizona University, University of Arizona or the Arizona Board of Regents — for at least 12 months.
- They have worked at least 1,250 hours in the year immediately preceding the start date of the leave.
- They are requesting a leave of absence for an FMLA-qualified reason.
ASU leave
Employees may be eligible for an ASU non-FMLA leave for the following reasons:
- They are not eligible for an FMLA leave.
- They are requesting a leave of absence for personal or military reasons.
- They have exhausted their FMLA entitlement.
