Leaves management
Departments' information
Faculty and staff members assigned to your department, school or college may request one of the following types of leaves:
- A continuous leave of absence if they must be absent from work for more than three consecutive workdays,
- An intermittent leave of absence if they must miss work on an intermittent basis due to an on-going personal or immediate family member’s medical condition.
A leave of absence may be categorized as one or more of the following types of leaves:
- FMLA paid
- FMLA unpaid
- ASU non-FMLA - leave paid
- ASU non-FMLA - leave unpaid
Office of Human Resources Benefits Design and Management staff are available to assist departments in managing leaves of absence to ensure compliance with ASU policy as well as federal and state regulations.
ASU leave
Employees may be eligible for an ASU non-FMLA leave because of the following reasons:
- Are not eligible for an FMLA leave. See FMLA eligibility for details.
- Are requesting a leave of absence for personal or military reasons.
- Have exhausted their FMLA entitlement.

FMLA
Employees may be eligible for a Family and Medical Leave Act leave for the following reasons:
- Have been employed by an Arizona University System institution—ASU, Northern Arizona University, University of Arizona or the Arizona Board of Regents—for at least 12 months
- Have worked at least 1,250 hours in the year immediately preceding the leave start date and
- Are requesting a leave of absence for an FMLA-qualified reason
