Guidance for Managers

The Employee Assistance Office provides resources and support for managers to help foster a healthy workplace.

Managers play a pivotal role in creating an inclusive and supportive environment where employees can thrive. Leaders can establish a few healthy routines that encourage employees to engage in activities that meet their personal and professional wellness needs, including:

  • Encourage participation in events and programs.
  • Maintain a compassionate approach to mental health and well-being.
  • Meet with employees regularly to check in on their well-being.
  • Model a healthy lifestyle.
  • Share programs, activities and resources regularly.
  • Uphold privacy and personal preferences while advocating health and growth.

Conversations about mental health and other sensitive topics can be difficult for supervisors to navigate. If you are concerned about the well-being, safety or recent behavior changes of an employee, co-worker or colleague, contact the Employee Assistance Office at 480-965-2271 for a confidential consultation. We will work with you to understand the issue, identify resources, develop an action plan, and ensure your team has the support they need, including:

  • Consultation.
  • Referrals and resource recommendations.
  • Support for teams experiencing a workplace crisis or loss.
  • Workshops for building resilience, managing stress, improving sleep and practicing mindfulness.

If an employee informs you they are experiencing threats or threatening behavior impacting their personal or professional safety and ability to carry out their professional duties, please email the Behavioral Response Team during regular business hours. Visit the BRT webpage for more information about the safety support available to employees at ASU. For imminent threats or safety concerns, always dial 911.
