Help with fluctuating staffing needs.

Temp-to-hire

The Office of Human Resources Talent Acquisition is expanding its efforts to address staffing needs with a new temporary and permanent job placement service. OHR Talent Acquisition is here to help you hire the staff you need when you need it.

Filling in the gaps

Department workloads can fluctuate for the following reasons:

  • Extra work during seasonal and peak periods.
  • Illness.
  • Parental or disability leave.
  • Planned or unforeseen employee absences or departures.
  • Time spent acquiring talent for vacant positions.
  • Unexpected or temporary demands for special projects.
  • Vacation.

Why hire an ASU temp?

  • Cost savings: OHR fees are lower than external temporary staffing vendors. Hiring through OHR lowers overhead costs, enabling you to meet your staffing needs economically.
  • Efficiency and flexibility: OHR balances short-and long-term planning and permanent employment while allowing you to deal with fluctuating staffing needs without sacrificing core functions.
  • Flexible commitment: Evaluate a temporary employee without a long-term commitment. If the temp does not meet the department’s expectations over a designated period, OHR will assist with termination and recruiting replacement talent.
  • Hassle-free hiring: The OHR team assembles a diverse pool of candidates qualified for various critical and temporary positions across the university. OHR will work to understand your department’s priorities, needs, budget and time frame. The team will then select one or more candidates from the talent pool for you to interview.
  • Temp-to-hire possibilities: ASU prefers hiring long-term employees whenever possible. If the temporary employee performs well, this program allows you to confirm an organic fit and hire them for permanent placement.

How it works

Step one: Start the talent acquisition process

Complete an employee request form and submit your request to OHR. Once the team receives the request form, they will contact you about your staffing needs. OHR will then complete the following:

  1. Provide a list of candidates for you to interview.
  2. Check references and criminal history.
  3. Verify education credentials as needed for specified roles.

Step two: Select a candidate

Inform OHR which candidate you want to hire. They will offer the candidate the temporary assignment, process all required university, state and federal employment forms and complete background checks. OHR will notify the hiring manager about employment eligibility and determine a start date.

Step three: Prepare for onboarding

Coordinate hardware and software needs and access with the IT support team within your department to ensure the new employee has a functional workspace. If the temp is new to ASU, schedule them to attend new employee orientation, if necessary.

Step four: Onboard your temp

Help the new employee settle in by explaining the new hire packet, how to secure a parking permit and schedule a meet and greet with the department or staff. Use the employee onboarding checklist to ensure your new employee has everything they need to succeed.

Step five: Offboarding your temp

If you are dissatisfied with your temporary employee’s performance or no longer need their services, submit a termination request and the reason for termination with OHR Talent Acquisition. Supervisors are responsible for completing the offboarding checklist. OHR can coordinate the end of the assignment and suggest a replacement.
