Styrofoam and block polystyrene/chunk white Styrofoam commonly found in furniture or electronics packaging is no longer accepted for recycling at ASU. Please place Styrofoam in the landfill bin and consider alternatives, such as recyclable or compostable packaging materials, to help reduce landfill waste.
Our mission
Ditch the Dumpster diverts waste from landfills, supports local non-profits and teaches the ASU community about proper recycling and reuse.
Every year ASU students moving on or off-campus realize they have accumulated more stuff than they need or have space for. Many of those items do not belong in the landfill.
Ditch the Dumpster allows for reuse, repurpose or recycling of those items.

What is a Zero Waste event?
A Zero Waste event is an event with a set goal to minimize the total amount of waste sent to the landfill. Event planners can achieve zero waste at their events by reducing, reusing, and recycling where possible.
Email the Zero Waste department with your planning questions.
ASU’s air travel is responsible for about 25,000 metric tons of emissions each year. To offset the equivalent of these emissions, a price on carbon is added to all round-trip ASU-sponsored air travel. Purchased offsets will support the ASU Carbon Project, the program for mitigating ASU’s difficulty to reduce emissions while supporting the community, education and research.
How is the price on carbon administered?
Urban forestry
Trees are a primary strategy to combat the urban heat island effect and sequester carbon to fight climate change.
Using the Carbon Fund and private donations, ASU supports tree planting in the Phoenix metro area. As the trees mature, they will generate carbon offsets for ASU.
Since its inception, over 800 trees have been planted across the Phoenix metro area.
Community events
Launched in June 2018, the ASU Carbon Project purchases and generates offsets for difficult to mitigate ASU carbon emissions. The ASU Carbon Project is funded, in part, by the price on carbon for all ASU-sponsored air travel.
The project objectives are:
University Sustainability Practices engages in research to help the university meet sustainability goals.
It is important to celebrate wins along the way in achieving ASU’s sustainability goals.
The program is on Canvas and participants self-enroll by following the link above. Once in Canvas, participants can review the criteria for the credits or take the test to receive their certification automatically. Participation can contribute towards the sustainability core expectations on annual performance evaluations.
