Urban forestry
Urban forestry
Trees are a primary strategy to combat the urban heat island effect and sequester carbon to fight climate change.
Using the Carbon Fund and private donations, ASU supports tree planting in the Phoenix metro area. As the trees mature, they will generate carbon offsets for ASU.
Since its inception, over 800 trees have been planted across the Phoenix metro area.
Community events
The Urban Forestry Program has hosted volunteer planting events to engage volunteers and community members. City Council members and other officials often attend to show support for urban forestry and sustainability.
Technical training
Students from Mesa Community College are being trained in carbon offset verification and validation practices.
Youth education
The National Sustainability Teachers' Academy at ASU developed a five-module educational curriculum about trees and their role in the ecosystem for fifth–ninth graders.
