Aluminum and Loyalty Cups Arrive at ASU Sporting Events

ASU’s Mountain America Stadium introduced reusable aluminum and loyalty cups at Sun Devil Athletics events.

The stadium is transitioning from single-use plastic cups to aluminum cups in the suites and introduced a Sun Devil Athletics Loyalty Cup at Sodexo food and beverage outlets to promote the university’s zero waste goals and reduce single-use plastics. 

Aluminum cups offer a more sustainable alternative to traditional plastic cups by reducing waste and conserving natural resources. Unlike plastic, which often ends up in landfills or as litter, aluminum is infinitely recyclable, meaning these cups can be recycled and reused again and again without losing quality. 

This initiative is one of many ASU is taking to minimize its environmental footprint. ASU is committed to sustainability and leading by example in collegiate athletics by promoting refillable products and reducing waste generation. This transition supports ASU’s zero waste goals and sets a new standard for environmentally responsible practices in sports venues.

Purchasing a Sun Devil Athletics Loyalty Cup — previously known as the Zero Waste Cup — is an excellent way for ASU fans to show their support for a zero-waste university. Sun Devils may purchase the loyalty cup for a one-time $30 fee and receive free fountain drink refills at any Sodexo food and beverage outlet for use at ASU sports venues, excluding Mullett Arena.

By purchasing a Sun Devil Athletics Loyalty Cup, fans save on beverage costs and contribute to reducing ASU’s environmental footprint by reducing single-use plastic waste. ASU Zero Waste recorded 7,268 loyalty cup refills during the 2024 fiscal year.
