AI-Powered Waste Sorting Arrives at ASU
Smart, sustainable and efficient recycling reimagined.
ASU is introducing five Oscar Sort artificial intelligence-powered waste sorting systems to its campuses in spring 2025. These innovative sorting systems will help students, faculty and staff properly dispose of their waste while reducing contamination in recycling and compost bins.
Oscar Sort machines use AI to scan waste items and instantly identify whether they belong in a compost, recycling or landfill bin. If you have a coffee cup, lid, and straw, Oscar will recognize each component and guide you on properly disposing of each item—no guessing required! This interactive system aims to make recycling more accessible and educational for the ASU community.
The five Oscar Sort units will be installed in high-traffic areas to maximize engagement:
- Downtown Phoenix campus: Student Center @ the Post Office.
- Polytechnic campus: Student Union.
- Tempe campus: Memorial Union and Student Pavilion.
- West Valley campus: University Center.
Beyond everyday waste disposal, Oscar Sort tracks common waste trends and top contaminants, providing data to help ASU Zero Waste develop outreach campaigns that improve recycling habits and reduce single-use plastics on campus. Understanding what is frequently thrown away will allow ASU to promote reusable alternatives and better waste management strategies.
Participants will learn how to sort waste properly and contribute to helping ASU achieve its sustainability goals. Every correctly sorted item makes a difference in keeping our campus clean and sustainable.
