Self-report services   Non-emergency damage, loss and theft reports

The Arizona State University Police Department is committed to the safety of ASU students, faculty and staff. The ASU PD main headquarters are on the Tempe campus, with substations at Downtown, Polytechnic and West campuses.

The police department operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The police dispatch center answers all 911 calls and administrative phone lines for each campus.

The ASU Police Department is a dually accredited law enforcement agency.

  • Since 1997, the department has been credited through The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA).
  • In March 2016, the department received its first accreditation from the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA).

Accreditation demonstrates to the community and law enforcement colleagues that ASU PD meets the very highest standards.

Mission Statement

The mission of the ASU Police Department is to foster a safe, community-centered environment through engaged collaboration committed to dignity and respect.

Law Enforcement Authority

The Arizona State University  Police Department is a full-service public law enforcement agency, established by the Arizona Board of Regents and the President of ASU. There are 159 employees in the department, including 87 sworn personnel. By the authority vested in them by the legislature of the State of Arizona, the ASU Police Department provides original jurisdictional law enforcement, security, and safety services on property owned or controlled by the ABOR. ASU Police Officers are fully certified as police officers by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (Ariz. Rev. Stat. § 1-215). ASU Police Officers are armed and vested with full law enforcement powers, including the authority to make arrests. As set forth in Ariz. Rev. Stat. § 13-3871, the authority of police officers may extend beyond ASU primary jurisdiction to any place within the state:

  1. Where an officer has prior consent from the agency head or designee having primary jurisdiction; or
  2. Under any of the circumstances set forth in Ariz. Rev. Stat. § 13-3883.

Additionally, through agreements with the Cities of Tempe, Mesa, Phoenix and Glendale and because city streets run through or are contiguous with ASU property, Officers will give appropriate secondary attention to traffic control and enforcement on those streets. ASU Police Officers have the authority to enforce state and federal laws within the limits imposed by the state and federal constitutions and judicial rulings. The ASU Police Department does not tolerate abuse of law enforcement authority.

Administrative Authority

Ariz. Rev. Stat. § 15-1627 grants ASU the right to adopt rules controlling vehicles and non-pedestrian devices, e.g., bicycles, tricycles, unicycles, skateboards, roller skates and equines. Officers are responsible for enforcing maximum speeds, required traffic stops, direction of travel, and authorized hours of travel.

While the ASU Dean of Students enforces the Student Code of Conduct, Officers may inform the Dean of Students of violations to the code using the Dean Referral process.
