Enroll, edit or update your benefits
Eligible employees have three opportunities to enroll in or change their benefits:
- Within 30 days of your hire or benefits eligibility date.
- During the annual Open Enrollment period.
- Within 30 days of a qualified life event — e.g., marriage, birth, loss of coverage.
How do I manage my benefits?
Manage your benefits in Workday:
Go to the Benefits and Pay app to view or change coverage. For step-by-step help, review the Employee Benefits and Management Guide.
New hire eligibility
We offer a variety of benefits for employees and their dependents. Talk to your family to ensure your benefits elections fit your needs. Remember, the enrollment deadline for the new hire or rehire benefits is 30 calendar days from your hire date.
Employees rehired or who transfer within the Arizona university system — which includes ABOR, NAU and UofA — or from an Arizona state agency are required to enroll. Learn more about eligibility and enrollment requirements. Please ensure your enrollment is completed on time to avoid any coverage gaps.
Open Enrollment
Employees can review and change their benefits elections each year starting in October. Open enrollment is your opportunity to adjust your benefits based on life changes like marriage or the birth of a child.
After open enrollment ends, you generally cannot make changes until the next enrollment period unless you experience a qualifying life event. Changes made during open enrollment take effect in January.
During the open enrollment period, you can:
- Enroll in benefits for the first time.
- Change existing benefits, including health, dental, vision and life insurance.
- Add or remove dependents from coverage.
- Opt out of specific benefits, if applicable.
Qualified life events
A qualified life event is a significant life change that allows you to adjust your benefits outside the regular open enrollment period. When a QLE occurs, you can change your benefits within 30 days by submitting a benefits change request in Workday.
QLE examples include:
- Birth or death of a dependent.
- Marriage or divorce.
- Change in a dependent’s eligibility.
Updating beneficiaries
Reviewing your beneficiary designations once a year or after a significant life event like marriage, divorce or the birth of a child is important. Consider speaking with a legal advisor if you need guidance.
You can update your beneficiaries at any time. To update your beneficiaries, initiate the "Change Beneficiaries" task in Workday.
You can name the following your primary and secondary beneficiaries:
- A person or multiple people.
- A charity.
- The trustee of a trust.
- Your estate.
Important note under Arizona law:
If you want your ex-spouse to remain your beneficiary, you must re-designate them after your divorce, indicating a new relationship — e.g., a friend.
