Academic professional and faculty summer hires

Hiring managers can use the following criteria to determine how to process a summer hire for academic professionals of faculty. 

Benefits eligibility criteria
State and university benefits package: Regularly scheduled to work .50 FTE or more 20 or more hours per week for an anticipated duration of at least 90 consecutive days, including all sessions or semesters — fall, spring or summer A, B or C. Refer to the summer faculty positions chart for samples.

New — not previously employed in spring

  • If only working in the summer, the summer position would be a variable SUM or WTR faculty, regardless of FTE. They are not eligible for benefits, because they will not work for a minimum of 90 consecutive days.
  • If working in both summer and fall below .50 FTE, the summer position is SUM or WTR faculty — variable. The fall position is faculty associate - variable - and must be .40 FTE or less.
  • If working in both summer and fall at .50 FTE or more. the summer position is SUM Instructor — not pre-collected — NT or NC academic. The fall position is Instructor — NT or NC academic.
  • If working in summer below .50 FTE and working in fall at .50 FTE or more, the summer position is SUM or WTR faculty - variable. The fall position is Instructor — NT or NC academic.
  • If working in summer at .50 FTE or more and working in the fall below .50 FTE, the summer position is SUM or WTR faculty — variable. The fall position is faculty associate — variable — and must be .40 FTE or less.

Note: 12-month contract summer hires positions at 0.50 FTE or more for 90 days or longer are eligible for benefits and mandatory retirement.
