Energy conservation

Arizona State University is currently implementing many different Energy Conservation Measures (ECM’s) throughout its various campuses. Projects include, but are not limited to, lighting, mechanical, electrical, infrastructure, utility and overall building improvements.

Room temperature conservation guidelines

ASU design guidelines currently specify that classrooms and offices are heated to no higher than 68° F, and cooled to no lower than 78° F. These guidelines reduce the amount of energy used for space conditioning.

Facilities energy initiatives and tools

ASU’s Energy Innovations and Facilities Management departments regularly assess buildings across ASU campuses to identify energy efficiency upgrade projects such as:

  • Building envelope improvements.
  • HVAC equipment upgrades and optimization through control strategies.
  • Lighting retrofits.

Energy efficiency retrofit projects initiated or ongoing in FY 2023 and FY 2024 include:

  • HVAC system optimization through control system programming changes, new sensors, and/or upgraded equipment in the following buildings:
    • Altitude Chamber.
    • Applied Arts Pavilion.
    • Bateman Physical Science Center F.
    • Carson Student Athlete Center.
    • Peralta Hall.
    • Picacho Hall.
    • Santa Catalina Hall.
    • Simulator Building.
    • Technology Center.
  • Lighting upgrades at the following buildings:
    • Applied Arts Pavilion.
    • Bateman Physical Science Center F.
    • Carson Student Athlete Center.
    • College Avenue Commons.
    • Creativity Commons.
    • Engineering Center A-Wing.
    • Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium.
    • Nelson Fine Arts Center.
    • Peralta Hall.
    • Picacho Hall.
    • Ross-Blakley Hall.
    • Santa Catalina Hall.

Energy efficiency, monitoring, or management projects that are planned or being evaluated include:

  • Implementation of a new enterprise-wide energy information system.
  • Implement fault detection and diagnostics software on a set of buildings at the Downtown Phoenix campus.
  • A battery energy storage system at the West Valley campus will be installed to reduce utility load during times of peak demand.
  • Pilot application of new reflective and thermally emissive roof coating for buildings.
  • Various lighting projects, including relamping at the following parking lots — 11, 41, 45, 50, 55, 58, 59, 59E and 72.
