University Gateway Building

The new Tempe campus academic and office space is located just west of the new Mill Avenue Parking Structure and sets the western edge of the Tempe campus along Mill Avenue.

The five-story building will house various programs from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts including, music, music therapy, art, animation and photography. The facility will host state-of-the-art dark rooms, creative maker spaces, an e-sports lounge, large computer labs and 3D printing technology.

The project will also support sound research, sound labs, stop-motion and motion capture studios. The music department will add acoustically isolated and tuned private practice rooms and larger ensemble practice rooms in the expansion.

Providing one of the best views of Mill Avenue, the exterior design of the building incorporates a unitized curtainwall system that produces a faceted, gem-like articulation that changes throughout the day. The streetscape of Mill Avenue will be enhanced at the ground level with leasable restaurant and retail space, pulled back from the street edge to produce an inviting pedestrian corridor for travel across the facade.

The project is tracking LEED Gold certification, utilizing many energy-saving and water-reduction technologies.
