Description

Chalk Art Competition

USP and HIDA kicked off April with a day of chalk art! Staff, faculty, and students were invited to submit sustainability designs and invited to create their designs in chalk. Attendees can vote on their favorite designs as they stroll the chalk plots. Winners will receive sustainable prizes!

Fair Trade Tabling Event

Stop by to learn about the significance of Fair Trade, connect with campus resources and enjoy some Fair Trade treats courtesy of University Sustainability Practices and Sun Devil Hospitality.

Cakes and Cacti: Plant Sale and Pancake Breakfast

Sun Devil Hospitality and USP celebrated Earth Day Every Day at the Garden Commons on the Polytechnic Campus! Attendees practiced sustainability by eating a hyper-local breakfast with mesquite pancakes made from local mesquite tree flour, fresh squeezed orange juice from oranges at the Garden Commons and coffee from a local roaster. There was also a plant sale of cacti and succulents grown at the Garden Commons.

Virtual Sustainable Event Planner Training

Join the University Sustainability Practices and Zero Waste Departments to learn how to plan your ASU events sustainably! This virtual session is open to all ASU staff and faculty and will provide you credit for the Sustainable Event Planner Training in CareerEDGE upon completion.

Sustainability Walking Tours

The Sustainability Tour highlights several “Sustainability Points of Pride” that exemplify ASU’s effort to incorporate sustainability principles into its physical and academic environment.

Blue Bag Sorts

Sort through waste contents collected in the Zero Waste Department’s Blue Bag program to see what hard-to-recycle materials staff at ASU dispose of in their offices.

Electric Vehicle Test Drive Event This event provided an opportunity for ASU-approved drivers to test drive an ASU electric fleet vehicle and check out ASU’s commitment to electrifying its fleet vehicles.

Fair Trade Tabling University Sustainability Practices and Sun Devil Hospitality celebrated Fair Trade Month by tabling to teach about the significance of Fair Trade, connect the ASU community with resources, and share some Fair Trade treats.

Earth Day Every Day 2023 engagement and events

University Street Market USP and University Street Market kicked off April with a vintage thrift market. There was vintage ASU gear for sale and sustainable giveaways!

Garden Commons Farm Stand Students received free campus-grown produce, and staff could purchase it for $5. Meal kits were also available that provided non-perishable goods to make a meal with the produce provided. The funds contributed to the growth of the Garden Commons to serve the ASU community.

Blue Bag Sorts ASU's Zero Waste department hosted Blue Bag sorts to sort hard-to-recycle waste. These sorts occurred each Friday during April and provided an educational volunteer opportunity.

Earth Festival

To celebrate Earth Day, USP hosted the Earth Festival! This festival brought together various ASU departments and vendors to showcase sustainability practices by providing educational materials, sustainability giveaways and more! Attendees joined USP and other ASU departments and vendors in recognizing that Earth Day is every day!

October 2022 Campus Sustainability Month engagement and events

Basics of Herb Gardening Workshop Hosted at the Garden Commons on the Polytechnic Campus, this workshop provided best-growing practices for herbs that thrive in the Sonoran Desert.  17
Chalk Art A local chalk artist created a "pathway to sustainability" chalk drawing. This interactive path led participants through sustainable habits aligning with the Personal Action goal.  50
Downtown Phoenix Campus Sustainability Month Tabling USP tabled on Taylor Mall on the Downtown Phoenix campus with games, giveaways and opportunities to learn more about ASU sustainability and Campus Sustainability Month events.  30
Single Use Scaries USP and Zero Waste hosted two tables outside the Student Pavilion that focused on spreading the knowledge about the harms of using single-use plastics.  97
Solar Sewing Machine Paul Nosa, an Arizona artist, brought his solar-powered sewing machine out to create sustainable patchwork designs for participants based on a few short words.  103
Status of Women Conference The women of USP engaged in conversations surrounding sustainable self-care products during the Status of Women Conference. These two-hour-long sessions discussed purchasing sustainable self-care products and the benefits they provide to the environment.  53
Sustainable Food Fest USP, in partnership with Sun Devil Hospitality, showcased sustainable and local food vendors in the various dining halls and P.O.D. Markets across all campuses.  100
Sustainability Walking Tours Learn everything there is to know about ASU sustainability points of pride on campus. This guided tour took guests on a short loop to visit LEED-certified buildings, solar arrays and more.  43

Sun Devils can learn about ASU’s sustainability goals and how they can get involved when participating in one of the many events occurring throughout the year at ASU. Campus Sustainability events include special engagement during Campus Sustainability events in October and Earth Day Every Day events in April, focusing on local action and sustainability solutions on college and university campuses.
