Cady Mall

At the entrance to the Anthropology building you will find:

SAGO-PALM - Cycas Revoluta

Though it has palm-like foliage, the sago-palm is not a true palm at all. It is classified as a gymnosperm, a group of plants such as pine, spruce, cedar and yews with naked seeds. It is thought to be quite primitive, dating back to at least the Mesozoic Period, 65 to 225 million years ago, when it was widespread and possibly a favorite food of some dinosaur. This relic of the past now occurs naturally only in tropical and sub-tropical areas in eastern Asia, but you can see many cultivated examples of it on campus. It grows very slowly to 6-10 feet. Male and female flower structures occur on separate plants. It’s popular for garden and planting containers. The fronds are used in floral arrangements. In the desert, it prefers afternoon shade.

In the lawn area in front of the Anthropology building you will find:

SILK FLOSS TREE - Chorisia Speciosa

The most noticeable feature of this South American Species are the thick prickles that cover the trunk. It can grow 30-60 feet tall, the green trunk becoming gray with age. Medium green leaves are divided into finger like leaflets. In autumn pink to purple flowers put on an attractive display. Trees are deciduous in our climate but evergreen in mildest areas.

There are five edible plants here on Cady Mall. Directly in front of the entrance to the Anthropology building you can find the herb:

ROSEMARY - Rosmarinus Officinalis

Take a close sniff of the foliage of this hardy, evergreen shrub and you’ll recognize the familiar scent of one of our most popular herbs. Rosemary is native to the Mediterranean region and has been used as a seasoning in cooking for centuries. It is also well adapted to hot, dry conditions and makes an attractive garden plant. Rosemary is a member of the min family which often have 2-lipped flowers. The light blue flowers appear in spring and sometimes fall. Small nuts in fours follow. There are two varieties, upright and prostrate.

SOUR ORANGE - Citrus aurantium

The oranges on these trees look pretty tempting and many newcomers to Arizona try to eat them. However they are called sour orange for a reason. Though native to Asia, sour oranges have long been grown in southern Europe where the fruit is made into a marmalade and the flowers used in the perfume industry. The Spanish introduced the Seville orange (as it is also known) to the New World. More recently sour orange rootstock has been used to confer greater cold hardiness on sweet oranges. They make attractive ornamental well-suited for small areas. Typical foliage is dense and dark green. Leaves are pointed ovals to 4 inches long. Most Citrus have winged petioles (leaf stems). Heavenly scented, creamy white flowers are a sure sign of spring. By fall, Trees are decorated with the colorful fruit clusters.

LEMON - Citrus

A little farther north you can find a lemon tree.

In front of the Language and Literature building you will find:

OVAL KUMQUAT - Fortunella margarita

This small tree or shrub forms a dense rounded canopy with lustrous bright green leaves to 3 inches long.  Its ultimate size depends on the type of rootstock used.  White flowers are very fragrant.  Bright orange, 1-inch long fruits are very decorative and produced only in warm climates.  They can be picked right off the tree and eaten, rind and all.  They are also used for making marmalades and in sauces.  Native to East Asia.

In front of the Mathews building you will find:

SWEET BAY - Laurus nobilis

Sweet bay is the true laurel cherished throughout history.  The Greeks (who called it Daphne) deemed it sacred in honor of their god Apollo.  The Romans considered it protection against dangerous storms; their celebrated p[oets and conquerors were crowned with laurel wreaths.  Ancient Greeks and Romans expounded on its medicinal uses, and Biblical references to it abound.  Today it is used mostly as an herb for cooking and as an ornamental tree in landscaping.

Conifer Trees

Conifer [koh-nuh-fer] - any of numerous, chiefly evergreen trees or shrubs of the class Coniferinae (or group Coniferales), including the pine, fir, spruce, and other cone-bearing trees and shrubs, and also the yews and their allies that bear drupelike seeds.
