John L. Pickens
John L. Pickens is currently Chief of Police of ASU Police Department for all four university campuses – Downtown, Polytechnic, Tempe and West. He was appointed Director/Chief of Police of Public Safety at Arizona State University at the Tempe campus June 30, 2000 and reorganized the department to consolidate three campus police departments under his leadership in 2003. In 2006, he implemented law enforcement and security services at a newly formed campus in downtown Phoenix, a model different than other ASU law enforcement operations.
John began his law enforcement career with St. Louis City Metropolitan Police Department in June 1974. He joined the Pine Lawn Police Department in 1978 and was appointed Chief of Police in 1981 at 31 years of age. He was appointed Director of Police at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1987 and Director of Public Safety at Northern Illinois University in 1994.
He holds a BS degree in management from Maryville University in St. Louis and an MA in management/business from Webster University in St. Louis. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, 146th session and a graduate of the FBI Midwest Law Enforcement Development Seminar.
He is a member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), FBI National Academy Associates-Arizona Chapter (FBINAA), International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA), FBI Law Enforcement Development Association (LEEDA), International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) in which he serves as the immediate past General Chair of the University and College Police Section, and Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police (AACOP) in which he serves as Immediate Past President. He is the past chair of the Arizona Law Enforcement Academy (ALEA) Users Group and previously served as chair of the Campus Parking Committee for three years, a sub-committee of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators.
