
Alexander Kohnen was recently named Arizona State University’s vice president for Facilities Development and Management. He reports directly to Morgan R. Olsen, ASU executive vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer.
Kohnen assumed the VP position after a stint as interim vice president for the ASU team devoted to creating and managing the university’s over 27 million-square-foot built environment.
“Alex quickly adapted to the interim VP position, exhibiting strong leadership and collaboration skills supporting ASU’s charter and goals,” Olsen said. “I am delighted that he will continue his senior management role as part of our Business and Finance team.”
Kohnen leads a department responsible for facilities, infrastructure and grounds, including the management, planning, design, construction, renovation, and maintenance of all university-owned property at each ASU campus.
He joined ASU in 2016 as the executive director of Facilities Management after a 20-year naval career focused on facilities and construction management.

Kohnen is a 1996 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering, focusing on Astrodynamics. He holds a Master of Engineering in Environmental Engineering — Water Quality — from the University of Florida and an MBA from Colorado State University. He is currently a Ph.D. student at ASU’s School of Sustainability.
