On Aug. 8, 2020, U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order allowing for the temporary deferral of the 6.2% Social Security tax withholding paid by employees on certain wages between Sept. 1, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2020, subject to specific conditions. Under this order, any deferred Social Security tax would come due Jan. 1, 2021, through April 30, 2021, withheld from employee paychecks and remitted to the Social Security Administration.
ASU has reviewed the memorandum and IRS guidance and, at this time, has determined it would not be prudent to participate in the deferral program. ASU will continue to monitor legislation and IRS guidelines and will communicate to the university community should the university’s position change.
