SUSTAINABLE PRINTING |
Arizona State University has selected the following vendors to provide print services. ASU has reviewed the sustainability practices of these vendors and finds them in compliance with our standards. Most importantly, all of them have achieved Certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
What are the benefits of using an FSC Certified Printer?
Only FSC® Certified printers allow you to show your concern for the environment by printing the FSC label on your piece.
Who is FSC?
The Forrest Stewardship Council (FSC) was established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation and is represented in more than 50 countries around the world.
Why is certification important?
FSC certification provides a concrete chain of custody link between responsible production and consumption of forest products.
When requesting printing projects please adopt the following sustainable printing practices:
- Use recycled paper with a minimum recycled content of 30% whenever possible.
- Request FSC certification (when time and budget allows). Each print vendor can place the appropriate label or the label can be provided to you for placement. However, the FSC guidelines for labeling must be followed.
- Eliminate the use of shrink wrap.
- Estimate usages carefully so that you don't print more than you need.
- Use uncoated paper whenever possible (even though coated paper can have high recycle content – the look and feel of uncoated has a more 'environmental' look and feel).
- Explore if laminated items, such as postcards, can be recycled.
PRINT BUYING PROCESSFor all printing needs, you must comply with the University's Graphic Standards. University policy defines how departments acquire printing services and products. Printing acquisition at ASU is divided into three categories:

PRINT BUYING FOR ORDERS LESS THAN $5000If you are spending less than $5,000, you may purchase printing services from the folowing list of Internal Sources and Contracted Printers. The preferred method of payment for small dollar orders is the Purchasing Card; the following suppliers will also accept payments ranging from direct billing to your account (internal service centers) to Limited Value Purchase Orders (non-ASU providers). |

Print Buying for Orders of $5,000 or moreIf you are spending $5,000 or more, obtain a minimum of three quotes from the Internal Sources and Contracted Printers. If you want to use the low quote and pay for the work with a Purchasing Card then e-mail the quotes along with the last four digits of the Purchasing Card number and the cardholder’s name to both Candace Misko and Pamela Cabello. Purchasing will increase the requested Purchasing Card limits to allow the print transaction. In the unlikely event that you want to use other than the low quote then also include a detailed explanation. These will be approved only in rare circumstances. You may also enter a requisition (RX document in Advantage) and provide backup paperwork to Pamela Cabello to source the work for you. Purchasing will then send a request for quote to all of the contract printers and will issue a purchase order to the lowest bid for the work. This process will take considerably longer than the use of a Purchasing Card. |
